Location
Lat 9° 32' 6S Long 160° 29' 16E Aola bordering Aola Bay is located on the north coast of Guadalcanal. Roughly forty miles to the west is Lunga Point. Also known as Aula or Tenaghau.
Wartime History
On May 3, 1942 in the morning, a ship with RAAF personnel that evacuated from Tulagi, Gavutu and Tanambogo spent the day at Aloa with Martin Clemens then after dark departs bound for Vila in New Hebrides.
On November 4, 1942 at 5:30am U.S. Navy Task Force 65 (TF 65) including USS Manley (DD-74), USS McKean (DD-90), USS Neville (APA-9), USS Heywood (APA-6) and USS Fomalhaut (AK-22) entered Aola Bay and
made an amphibious landing Aola. The force included five hundred 14th Construction Battalion (Seabees) tasked with building Bomber 2 plus the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion "Carlson's Riders" (less detachments) along with elements of the U.S. Army 147th Infantry Regiment and the Marine 5th Defense Battalion. On November 6, 1942 at dawn Carlson's Raiders departed on "Carlson's Patrol" (The Long March) inland along a jungle trail northwest towards the Reko River.
