Location Hill 35 is located inland from the north coast of Guadalcanal in Guadalcanal Province in the Solomon Islands. During the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Americans designated this feature as "Hill 35" when assigning a numeric designation to each major hill on the north coast of Guadalcanal. To the south was Wright Road and beyond Hill 21, Hill 11 and Mount Austen. Wartime History During the Battle of Mount Austen, Hill 35 was to the north of the The Gifu near the base of Mount Austen. By December 20, 1942 U.S. Army engineers completed a rough jeep road dubbed Wright Road to the south of Hill 35. This allowed jeeps to reach this location, but no further and all supplies and ammunition had to be hand carried forward to the front line. Today During 1984, the Japanese Memorial (Japanese War Memorial) was dedicated atop Hill 35 as the main Japanese war memorial on Guadalcanal. Today, this hill is locally referred to as the "Japanese Memorial" or sometimes "Japanese War Monument" for the monument at the summit. References Orchids in the Mud page 121 (Page 121) "[December 21, 1942] The dense terrain. heayy rains. and Japanese harassing patrols made bringing water, ammunition, and food to the front difficult. Jeeps could only bring supplies to Hill 35 and no further. From there on all supplies had to be hand carried forward; over muddy jungle slopes and through dense jungle ravines. The tropical heat exhausted the very best of men" Thanks to John Innes for additional information Contribute
