Background
On October 5, 1944 constituted as the 464th Fighter Squadron (464th FS) in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) at Bruing Army Airfield in Nebraska. On October 12, 1944 activated as the 464th Fighter Squadron (464th FS) in the 507th Fighter Group (507th FG) at Peterson Field in Colorado operating the P-47 Thunderbolt. On October 20, 1944 moves to
Bruning Army Airfield in Nebraska. On December 15, 1944 moves to Dalhart Army Airfield in Texas. On April 30, 1945 begins a movement via Fort Lawton in Seattle. On May 22, 1945 embarked aboard USAT Cape Canso at Seattle and steams via Pearl Harbor then across the Pacific via Kniwetok and Ulithi bound for Ie Shima in southern Japan. Assigned to the 20th Air Force (20th AF).
Wartime Historya
On June 24, 1945 moves to Ie Shima Airfield off Okinawa.
During August 1945 reassigned to the 8th Air Force (8th AF).
On July 2, 1945 took off from Ie Shima Airfield on the squadron's first combat mission to escort B-24s oer southern Kyushu.
On August 8, 1945 a total of 160 P-47N Thunderbolts from 318th Fighter Group, 413th Fighter Group and 507th Fighter Group took off from Ie Shima Airfield on a mission to rendezvous with B-29s. After take off nine aborted. A total of 151 P-47N Thunderbolts escort the B-29s to and from Yawata. Over the target, spotted 55-65 Japanese fighters and engaged in air combat. The enemy pilots were deemed to be not aggressive and not experienced. The Thunderbolts claimed a total of thirteen victories. Five P-47s were lost including P-47N pilot Captain Llyod Henley 20 miles north of Yawata, P-47N pilot F/O J.B. Hill bailed out over Yawata. P-47N pilot Lt. Kempter bailed out 3 miles SW of Hime Shima and was seen in life raft. P-47N pilot Lt. Marvin (MIA) bailed out 60 miles SW of Shimo Koshiki and P-47N 44-88900 pilot F/O Paul Lynn (MIA) 50 miles from Suwanose Shima. This was the only P-47N only long range escort mission during the Pacific War.
On August 13, 1945 took off from Ie Shima Airfield on a fighter sweep over Keijo (Seoul) in Korea. This was the squadron's last combat mission of World War II.
Postwar
On January 29, 1946 moves to Yontan Airfield on Okinawa. On May 27, 1946 inactivated. On May 28, 1946 redesignated 199th Fighter Squadron and allocated to the Air National Guard (ANG).
