Background
On April 22, 1942 the 88th Reconnaissance Squadron (88th RS) was redesignated 436th Bombardment Squadron (436th BS) in the 7th Bombardment Group (7th BG) in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF).

On June 1, 1942 moves to Allahabad Airfield in India.

On June 4, 1942 first mission in China-Burma-India (CBI).

On November 14, 1942 moves to Gaya Airfield in India.

On January 24, 1943 nine B-24s including three flown by crews from 492nd Bombardment Squadron (492nd BS) bomb docks at Rangoon. Hits are scored on the wharves, storage areas and a 6,000-ton vessel in Rangoon Harbor.

On February 25, 1943 moves to Bishnupur Airfield in India.

On September 25, 1943 moves to Panagarh Airfield in India.

On December 1, 1943 lost is B-24J Liberator 42-73196 pilot 2nd Lt. John E. McLauchlen, Jr. (MIA).

On December 13, 1943 moves to Madhaiganj Airfield in India.

On June 14, 1944 moves to Tezgaon Airfield in India.

On October 6, 1944 moves to Madhaiganj Airfield in India.

On December 1, 1944 the squadron sends a detachment to Luliang Airfield in China to ferry gasoline to Suichwan Airfield until January 1, 1945 then returns to Madhaiganj Airfield.

On January 1, 1945 moves to Tezpur Airfield in India until the end of the Pacific War.

Postwar
On January 6, 1946 inactivated at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey. On October 1, 1946 reactivated and redesignated 436th Bombardment Squadron (Very Heavy) at Fort Worth Army Air Field operating the B-29 Superfortress. On September 18, 1947 becomes part of the U.S. Air Force (USAF). On July 20, 1948 redesignated 436th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) operating the B-36 Peacemaker. On August 1, 1958 moves to Barksdale AFB and begins operating the B-52 Stratofortress.
