Location San Marcelino Airfield was located at San Marcelino due west of Clark Field on Luzon in the Philippines. Also known as San Marcelino Field. Construction Built prewar by the U.S. Army and was still under construction by the start of the Pacific War. Wartime History During December 1941, at the start of the Pacific War used by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On December 9, 1941 San Marcelino Airfield measured 4,000' x 200' surfaced with sandy soil and lacked a control tower, landing lights or other facilities. In the evening, B-17 Flying Fortresses from the 7th Bombardment Group (7th BG), 14th Bombardment Squadron (14th BS) took off from Clark Field and landed at San Marcelino Airfield to disperse them. While landing, Filipino soldiers mistakenly fired on the bombers, mistaking them for enemy. American units based at San Marcelino (1941-1942) 27th BG, 91th BS (ground echelon) December 25, 1941 departs Cabcaben During January 1945, elements of the 38th Infantry Division (38th ID) immediately dashed inland to capture San Marcelino Airfield, but found that Filipino guerrillas under the command of Captain Ramon Magsaysay (later 7th President of the Philippines) secured the airfield three days earlier.
