Location Tanauan Airfield was located at an elevation of 3' above sea level east of Tanauan on the eastern coast of Leyte in Leyte Province in the Philippines. Borders Leyte Gulf to the east. To the north is Palo and to the south is Tolosa and beyond Dulag. To the west is Highway 1 that runs north to south. Construction After the October 20, 1944 U.S. Army landing on eastern Leyte this area was liberated by the U.S. Army. By November 25, 1944 efforts to repair Buri Airfield and San Pablo Airfield were abandoned and all available construction units began working on a single runway oriented roughly northeast to southwest parallel to the coast with three rows of taxiways and revetments to the west. On December 16, 1944 Tanauan Airfield became operational. Wartime History During late 1944, based U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) fighters and light bombers until those units moved to Mindoro and Luzon. The control tower was code named "Velvet Tower".
