Location Palm Island is fringed by a coral reefs inside Gavutu Harbor. Also known as Gaomi Island. To the southwest is Tanambogo Island and to the south is Gavutu Island. To the west is Florida Island (Nggela Sule, Big Gela) and further to the east is Tulagi. Prewar, the island was covered with palm trees and had a dock on the northwest tip. Wartime History Palm Island was located near theTulagi Seaplane Base (Gavutu, Tanambogo). During December 1943, U.S. Navy (USN) Construction Battalion "Seabees" built a diesel fuel tank, on Palm Island as part of the Gavutu Base area.
