Background
On October 28, 1942 constituted as the 528th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On November 3, 1942 activated in the 380th Bombardment Group (380th BG) "The Flying Circus" at Davis-Montham Field in Arizona equipped with the B-24 Liberator. On December 2, 1942 moves to Biggs Field in Texas. On March 4, 1943 moves to Lowry Field in Colorado. On April 19, 1943 begins a movement overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA).
Wartime History
On April 28, 1943 arrives in Australia assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF) but is attached to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) until January 1945. On April 28, 1943 moves to Manbulloo Field in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia.
On July 10, 1943 the squadron flew an armed reconnaissance mission (FEN I-49) over Babo Airfield. Lost is B-24D "Esmeralda II" 42-40507 pilot Captain Howard W. Merkel (MIA) shot down by Zeros and exploded and crashed.
On September 15, 1943 lost is B-24D "Snafu" 42-40513 damaged by a nose wheel collapse at Fenton Field and was later written off.
On September 21, 1943 lost is B-24D "Nothing Sacred" 42-40509 pilot 2nd Lt. Hugh B. Parris, Jr. damaged by fighters over Langgoer Airfield and returning crashed into Sugar Loaf Hill roughly three miles from Fenton Field.
On January 19, 1944 the 529th BS and 531st BS fly a bombing mission gainst Ambon. Lost is B-24J "Paper Doll" 42-73187 pilot 1st Lt. Harold H. Van Wormer (POW/MIA) shot down by Japanese fighters.
On July 5, 1944 lost is B-24D "Big Chief Cockeye" 42-40351 pilot F/O Harold A. Thornton a weather reconnaissance over Ceram (Seram) with the crew MIA with 4 POW, executed/died.
On March 8, 1944 lost is B-24D "Sunshine I" 42-41225 piloted by 1st Lt Leo M. Jennings shot down by Japanese fighters off Wewak.
On May 7, 1944 lost is B-24D "Toughy" 42-40525 pilot 1st Lt. John E. Terpning (MIA).
During February 1945 written off is
B-24D "Snafu No. 2" 42-41120 and scrapped.
On April 7, 1945 lost is B-24J "Lucky Don" 42-73485 pilot 2nd Lt. Burton R Langer
crashed on take off.
