Location Lat S 9 08', Long 160 13.9 E. Carter City was located on a peninsula at the southern tip of Florida Island (Nggela Sule, Big Gela) borders Tulagi Harbor, north of Macambo and Tulagi, west of Purvis Bay (Tokio Bay). Wartime History During 1943, U.S. Navy (USN) Naval Construction Battalion (NCB) "Seabees" built workshops and a marine railway plus landing craft repair base at this location. Dubbed "Carter City". Today The present day village at this location is Mbolo (Bolo). Roderick Eime visited on November 24, 2010: "Mbolo (also just Bolo) was a large US base. There are lots of concrete slab and even a road. A large dump site has all kinds of relics. "The well constructed concrete pavements and gutterings are all in fair condition. The locals, who apparently did not occupy the site previously, have moved in and used the cement foundations for their own huts. Three large concrete foundations were described to me as mess halls or "pubs". We were shown an enormous overgrown dump full of all sorts of stuff. I could make out truck chassis, propellers, an AA gun base and its tractor just pushed into the jungle. It would be interesting to find out what happened to all the structures. Locals say they were torn down and materials dumped, but I doubt that." Contribute
