Location Purvis Bay is located on the southern central coast of Florida Island (Nggela Sule). To the west is Tulagi Island. During the American occupation also known as "Port Purvis" or "Tokio Bay" [sic American incorrect spelling of "Tokyo"] for the Japanese destroyer shipwreck. When used by the U.S. Navy as "Port Pervis" for the anchorage area with berths for warships. Wartime History During May 1942 Purvis Bay was used by the Japanese Navy as a anchorage area until the morning of August 7, 1942 when the U.S. landings in the vicinity commenced. After securing the Tulagi Harbor area, Purvis Bay was used by the U.S. Navy (USN) and used as an anchorage area. Americans referred to Purvis Bay as "Tokio Bay" [sic], possibly due to the presence of the shipwreck of Kikuzuki (Kikuzuki No. 23) moved to this location in 1943 and abandoned. During July 1943 the bow section of LST 343 was abandoned in the vicinity. Kikuzuki (Kikuzuki No. 23) Sunk May 4, 1942. Salvaged by USN and towed to this location in middle 1943. USS LST-342 Damaged July 18, 1943 the bow section was towed to this location afterwards. Contribute
