Ship History
Built in 1934. Owned by a Japanese fishing company. Named Kofuku Maru in Japanese meaning Happiness or Good Fortune ship. Prewar, used to collect fish from local fisherman and transport them to market in Singapore.

Wartime History
On December 10, 1941 intercepted and captured by USS Edsall (DD-219) and escorted to Singapore. In Allied service, renamed Renamed MV Krait named for the krait snake found in Southeast Asia. Under the command of civilian Mr. W. R. Reynolds in early 1942 used to rescue evacuees from ships which sunk along the east coast of Sumatra. In total, this vessel rescued 1,100 people. After the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) surrendered, the Krait escaped via Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to India then to Australia. MV Krait was delivered to the Australian Army and selected by the Australian Services Reconnaissance Department for a secret mission.

Operation Jaywick
On September 2, 1943 departs Exmouth under the command of Lieutenant Hubert Edward "Ted" Carse on a secret mission "Operation Jaywick" to attack Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbor. Aboard were a the crew under the command of Lieutenant Hubert Edward "Ted" Carse and "Z Force" (Z Special Unit) commandos under the command of Major Ivan Lyon.

Disguised as a Malay fishing boat flying the Japanese flag, the vessel steamed into enemy territory to Subor Island roughly 11 km / 6.8 miles from Singapore Harbor. On September 26, 1943 deployed three two man folboats with Z Force commandos that paddled into Singapore Harbor and placed limpet mines on ships at anchor and hid when they exploded, sinking or damaging seven ships.

Afterwards, the commandos in their folboats paddled 80 km / 49.7 miles in their folboats to rendezvous with MVĀ Krait on October 2, 1943. Departing the area, they were approached by a Japanese patrol boat in the Lombok Strait but were not challenged. On October 19, 1943 returns to Exmouth without without the loss of any personnel. After the success of Operation Jaywick, Major Lyon began planning a followup raid code named Operation Rimau.

For the remainder of the Pacific War, Krait was later used for intelligence-gathering missions to Japanese occupied islands. During 1945, Operation Sunlag steamed off Timor to recover two SRD operatives, but the mission failed and returned to Darwin.

Postwar
After the surrender of Japan, to Ambon and used as transport for intelligence gathering missions to Buru, Aru, Ceram, Banda and Saparua. During this period, transported several Japanese prisoners, Army survey teams and a Naval intelligence officer.

Towed to Morotai, then steamed to Labuan Island off Borneo. One of the crew, Able Seaman Robert Harry took the ship's ensign as a souvenir. Afterwards, sold to the British Borneo Company and operated off Borneo. During early 1964, purchased by Australia and steamed back to Australia.

On May 30, 1964 ANZAC Day, dedicated as a war memorial by the governor of New South Wales with a commemorative plaque attached to the wheelhouse. Afterwards, used by the Australian Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol as a training and recreational vessel. During 1985 acquired by the Australian War Memorial (AWM) and designated as a museum ship. In 1988, placed on loan to the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM). During 2017, the ship underwent restoration that is ongoing into 2022.

Display
MV Krait survived World War II. During 1964 fully restored and used for training and recreation purposes by the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol. Afterwards, became part of the Australian War Memorial (AWM) collection on loan to the Australian National Maritime Museum (vessel number HV000076) and moored in Darling Harbour.

The Australian National Maritime Museum includes a display about MV Krait that includes a diorama created for the 75th anniversary of "Operation Jaywick" created by museum volunteers. During 2021, Australian National Maritime Museum added items related to Krait from the collection of Lieutenant Hubert Edward "Ted" Carse that were sold at auction in London and purchased to return them to Australia. Added to the collection was the Japanese flag made by Fay Manderson (wife of Harry Manderson and flown aboard Krait during Operation Jaywick and kept by Carse (ANMM 00055854), medals and knuckle knife with scabbard that belonged to crew member Able Seaman M. Berryman, RAN (ANMM 00055854 / AWM REL25432).

The Australian War Memorial (AWM) collection includes the log book of Krait's voyage from Australia to Singapore during September 1943 and October 1943 displayed in the Second World War Gallery. Items in the collection include the HMAS Ensign from MV Krait during 1945 taken by Able Seaman R H Easom (AWM REL31217). Model MV Krait during Operation Jaywick 1:16 scale by Wayne Masters made during 1984-1985 (AWM REL/16715).

Memorials
Lyon was killed during Operation Rimau on October 16, 1944. He is buried at Kranji War Cemetery at 27. A. 14.
